Chemical Use
A Read the Safety Data Sheets for the chemicals being used in the laboratory.

Chemicals should not get on your skin or clothing:

  • wash them off
  • notify your instructor
C Label all containers of chemicals, including water, to prevent accidents and facilitate disposal.
D Do not pour chemical reagents down the sink drain unless instructed to do so. Place used or waste chemicals in hazardous waste containers and label them with the correct waste label.
E Gloves and goggles must be worn when working with specific chemicals or specimens that have been preserved in formalin.

Notify your instructor of unsafe conditions such as but not limited to:

  • broken glassware
  • spilled chemicals
  • water on the floor

Instructors will clean up the glassware or spill and contact the lab coordinator with further any issues.

 

Waste Materials
A

Blue and white glass cardboard box

  • Glass (broken or disposable)

Red sharps biohazard container

    • Razor blades
    • Syringes
    • Needles
    • Scalpel blades

Hazardous Waste

Chemical waste needs to be placed in hazardous waste containers that are labeled using an ISU Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) office hazardous waste sticker.

Dissections

There are specific instructions for disposing of dissected animals.
